As most action movies are, Guardians of the Galaxy is packed full of loud scenes full of fast pace sound. The most unique audio characteristic is its soundtrack, a playlist full of memorable songs from the 70s through the 80s. Past action movies have set a hard rock precedent as far as music is concerned, stepping out of the bounds with a disco vibe, “Guardians” has a musical element to remember.
As far as audio and visual details go, this movie goes beyond the typical explosion, to focus on one aspect, the purple infinite stone. Three times when interacted with, this element creates a huge swirling vortex of purple and black. Inside sound what I can only imagine the center of a tornado somehow made of fire. This controlled explosion is not only dramatic, but also captivating. As an effect of the explosion, the victim or the one physically holding the stone starts to deteriorate and their body almost cracks into tiny pieces. This act of destruction is both imaginative, and intricate.

1. “Lemonade” Beyoncé 2016
2. “ARDIPITHECUS” Willow 2015 3. “Nevermind” Nirvana 1991 4. “The Dark Side of the Moon” Pink Floyd 1973 5. “In the Wee Small Hours” Frank Sinatra 1955 All of these albums have influenced the music industry in different ways, there is no way to rank or compare these 5 works of genius. I ordered these albums based on how the date they were released, starting with “In the Wee Small Hours” and ending with “Lemonade.” #5 “In the Wee Small Hours” Frank Sinatra was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, most commonly recognized by his songs “New York, New York” or “The Way You Look Tonight.” Released in April 1995, “In the Wee Small Hours” is a slow, emotional album. The themes of loneliness, sadness, and lost love are true and real, one of the first albums credited in being a “concept album.” This album reached number 2 on the US charts and stayed for 18 weeks. I think the most influential thing about this album is how raw and true the feelings are. I own this on record and even though I can’t relate to the heartbreak, I can’t help but well up inside. #4 “The Dark Side of the Moon” Pink Floyd is a band unlike any other; their music is unique and new for its time. Although “The Dark Side of the Moon” is Pink Floyd’s 8th album, it is one of the biggest albums of their legacy. The continuous flow of the music itself is impeccable; themes of greed, mental illness, passage of time, and death make this album a dark, psychedelic experience. When I think of this album I think of synthesizers and the SFX used in “Money” and “Time.” I myself can’t begin to explain the experience itself but this album is a trip. I think Pink Floyd is one of the most notable artists of the time to create an album with separate tracks that flow together, making one song. #3 “Nevermind” Nirvana itself was an influential band, exposing the music industry to the grunge, alternative rock music as a mainstream. Not only did it bring a new wave of music, but also it brought a new audience of those who had been overlooked, or ignored. This album, and the band led the transition of classic rock and roll to a new age of grunge. In 2005 the Library of Congress, for its “cultural, historical, or aesthetic importance,” added this album to the National Recording Registry. The guitar work alone in this album is amazing; I can only explain the feeling of the sound as hard. #2 “ARDIPITHECUS” Willow smith has not been given enough credit for this album. This album is lyrical excellence, the truths she speaks are subtle and moving, and the sound is clean. “Organization and Classification” is the first track on the album; it speaks out about how we are ruining ourselves trying to classify each other. Other songs like “Marceline” have a more child-like theme. Although this album has not had the recognition it deserves, it reaches the audience it speaks to. “ARDIPITHECUS” hasn’t made its mark on the world yet, but I think the artistry behind it will influence young artists to come. #1 “Lemonade.” Dropped on April 23, 2016, Lemonade is Beyoncé’s sixth studio album. Along with the 12 songs, She recorded a Film with poetry and visual art behind the work. The Album tells a story of JAY-Z cheating and her stages of grief, and eventually forgiveness. The last track of the Album, “Formation” upholds black excellence and pride, a growing and gorgeous theme in music today. This Album, like Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon,” is a continuous flow of powerful music. This album shows her imperfections, her pain, and her strength. The truth behind the art is what brings the emotion to the music, and inspires reality in music. To Alyssa, Welcome to Wakefield High School. Things are going to CHANGE, people are going to change, your interests are going to change, and your mental and physical health will change. It’s going to be okay, and it’s going to take time. If I could go back I wouldn’t change a thing, maybe try harder in the classes you don’t like, and drink more water. It took me all four years to become the wholesome person I am right now, and I am still working on myself, nothing happens overnight. Its important to remember that during these years, people are working on themselves too, and they might not be good friends because they are going through something, just give that person space and time. You are not in charge of taking care of everybody even at home it is okay to leave especially if it is for your own growth. It might not feel like it sometimes but Mom and Dad will always take care of you and be a part of home. Things will happen that will shake you up for a while, make you feel afraid or insecure. Like myself now, Stephanie has been through everything you’re going through, she will be your rock, never be afraid to confide in her. Sisters are forever and she will always love you. You also have to give her a break because college is hard for her, and its okay that she takes your nail polish, its just nail polish. Speaking of siblings hang out with nick more, I know you think he thinks you’re lame but he thinks you’re pretty cool, treasure every moment with him. Reach out to him too, I know you guys are weird with emotions but he will always stick up for you no matter what. Take Pumpkin on more walks, and play with her more, she loves you more than you know. You are a white female in America, which means you have privilege, use your voice. Take a stand for what you believe in, a lot of people agree with you and will stand by your side. Join the clubs the school offers, and make sure they stay on track of the mission they set. Find people who support your ideals, friends should support and uplift you. Be aware of how your friends treat you, and learn from the mistakes they make to better yourself. Finally listen to your body, know your limits, and take care of yourself. Wash your face twice a day and use coconut oil. Drink water and stay hydrated. Try organic foods and juice instead of soda. The better you eat the better you will feel. Your body is important and special, the least you could do is care for it, it is your home. Love you, Alyssa 2017 |
